2022 Sophomore Honors Summer Assignment
To prepare for the new year, you are being asked to read four chapters that deal with symbolism from How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster and analyze the autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou as it pertains to those chapters.
1. Follow this link to access the required chapters from How to Read Literature Like a Professor:
Chapter 9 – It’s More Than Just Rain or Snow
Chapter 12 – Is That a Symbol?
Chapter 18 – If She Comes Up, It’s Baptism
Chapter 25 – It’s My Symbol and I’ll Cry If I Want To.
Some Things to Remember:
- Don’t forget there are two pieces at play here: use what you read in How to Read Literature Like a Professor + apply it to your analysis of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
- Make sure you use spell check + proofread your responses -- this demonstrates professionalism and effort.
- When crafting your longer responses for the assignment, use formal paragraph structure and at least two pieces of evidence to support your main idea.
Enjoy! We can’t wait to read your thoughtful responses!
